Apache OpenOffice is a free, open source software suite of Office applications that uses an international open standard for the documents, and can also read and save in most other common office formats, including Microsoft Office. It includes applications for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics and databases. The Text Document file extension is .ott (.odt is the standard document file extension).

Templates for the OpenOffice Text Document can be saved, opened and used in much the same way as Word templates. Upon opening the OpenOffice welcome screen, there will be shown buttons for creating a new text document, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, database or formula. There is an Open button on this welcome screen that will open a file browsing dialogue box, and ODF Text Document Template can be selected as the file type to browse the hard disk or network drive.

Next to the Open button is a button for Templates... that opens the Templates and Documents panel where all the templates stored in the default location will be found.

The Templates and Documents panel has a link that goes directly to the OpenOffice Templates website at templates.openoffice.org - the link says simply "Get more templates on-line...". There are thousands of templates available that can be filtered,
